17/03/2007 - Just another Saturday on the High Street!
|
It was an early start for six Three Peak Challengers on Saturday 17 March as they met at 5.30 am. After driving to the Lake District, the team were ready for a big breakfast. At 9.50 they took a trip across the lake on the Ullswater Steamer to Howtown. Weather conditions started well, but soon turned with heavy rain and 60 mph gusting winds. Despite this, the group climbed 1,200 metres in six hours.
Within five minutes of landing, the team choose the most challenging route up to the peak of Steel Knotts. Once at the top they went across to High Rise, as they were climbing to the next mountain the cloud descended and the summit of High Street disappeared from view. So the group continued the climb using maps and compasses. After the team photo at summit, they called at The Knott before descending via Boredale Hause for a well earned pint in the pub.

Team leader Andy Goldsborough said: "It was a fantastic day and we are on track for completing the three peak challenge within 24 hours. The next date in the training plan is a weekend where we will climb one mountain in the day, have five hours rest while we set up the tents and then climb Scafell Pike in the dark. This will give us a taste of the real challenge."
